Back at one: Miami Heat's skid hits four after 93-89 loss to Altanta Hawks in OT (Associated Content)

When the buzzer sounded ending the game in overtime and sending the reeling Miami Heat to their fourth-straight defeat, this one at home to the Atlanta Hawks, 93-89, a song lyric popped in my head. It was "Back at One" by Brian McKnight, a song that topped the charts in 1999. It popped into my head not because the game reminded me of any of the lyrics, really, because McKnight was singing about a girl he believed it was undeniable he should be with, and would do whatever it took to get her back.

Playing without Marvin Williams is one thing. Plenty of teams can lose one starter and still operate most nights without suffering a drastic dropoff in production.

Playing without Williams and All-Star center Al Horford, however, is another matter. Too bad the Hawks will have to play without them both again in Charlotte Saturday night.

The Hawks suffered the ugliest loss in the franchise's Atlanta history in a 100-59 loss to the New Orleans Hornets, barely avoiding the franchise mark for lowest scoring total (57 points in St. Louis).

Sure, they faced a sizzling hot Hornets team, but that's still not a reasonable explanation for taking an historic whipping on your home floor.

"We just came out and laid an egg," Jamal Crawford said.

When I was a kid a local school used to sponsor bus trips down to the RAC (Rutgers Athletic Center) for New Jersey Nets games. We used to love to go to those games because the Nets had a young kid playing for them who was an incredible fast-break player and scorer by the name of Bernard King. King averaged 24.2 points per game as a rookie with Nets in 1977-78. Of course the Nets being the Nets they traded King away in 1979 because they were fed up with his drinking.

You won't find anyone in the Bucks' organization who doesn't believe Andrew Bogut should be chosen to the Eastern Conference All-Star team.

"He's definitely one of the elite centers in our conference," Bucks point guard Keyon Dooling said. "His defense is really underrated. He ranks first in the league in blocked shots (2.81 a game), and he's first or second in charges.

"People don't realize how good of a defender he is and the amount of points he saves us in a game."

Bogut has also been an outstanding rebounder this season, averaging 11.7 boards a game. That ranks fifth in the NBA.

Unfortunately for Bogut, the Bucks' record isn't good (15-24) and coaches, who vote for the reserves, tend to reward players on winning teams.

News of Marcus Camby's knee injury has Portland Trail Blazers fans shaking their heads — again — over the team's bad luck with injuries. Many are convinced the Blazers are cursed, ever since improbably winning the draft lottery in 2007 — having had just a 5.3 percent chance of doing so — and using that top pick to select Greg Oden out of Ohio State. Others think there's a conspiracy of some sort, something in play that's keeping the Blazers down.

As a New Jersey Nets fan I know what it's like to root for a team that has never won an NBA Championship.
