Welts said the reaction to the story and his announcement has been overwhelmingly positive. He got texts from league heavyweights, such as close friends Bill Russell and Charles Barkley, and others who were quick to publicly back his decision.

The Spurs led the Western Conference from wire to wire during the regular season only to add their name to a very short list of No. 1 seeds to lose in the first round of the playoffs.

The Memphis Grizzlies exploited the Spurs' major weakness—interior size—and dumped the Spurs in six games to send the proud franchise into a curious offseason in which it must figure out how to make the team better with little wiggle room to make many changes.

At least one Spurs player believes changes must be made. Point guard Tony Parker recently told the French publication L'Equipe and other French journalists that he doesn't think the Spurs are equipped to contend for a title.

Tim Thibodeau picked up the NBA Coach of the Year award. Thibodeau led the Chicago Bulls to 62 wins, overshadowing Miami and Boston in the Eastern Conference. However, a quick look at the list of recent winners won't bring much comfort to Thibodeau.

Suns Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

A sleepy start to the Suns' offseason was shaken awake by a front-page story in the New York Times wherein Suns president Rick Welts announced that he was gay.

In many walks of life and many business situations, this news would have been met with a shrug. But in big-time professional sports, such admissions still raise eyebrows, even with the sparkling track record of the 58-year-old Welts, who was the No. 3 man in the NBA offices and the brains behind the concept for All-Star Weekend before moving to the Suns in 2002.

Welts said the reaction to the story and his announcement has been overwhelmingly positive. He got texts from league heavyweights, such as close friends Bill Russell and Charles Barkley, and others who were quick to publicly back his decision.

Pacers Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

The first part of the Pacers' offseason—Larry Bird returning as president—is taken care of.

Now it's on to the next part.

Bird is in the process of figuring out who his coach will be next season. The frontrunner, according to Bird, is Frank Vogel.

Vogel led the Pacers to a 20-18 record and the playoffs for the first time since 2006 after taking over for the fired Jim O'Brien at the end of January.

"I haven't really gotten into the interview process, but obviously he's a frontrunner and we'll bring him back at the end (of the interviews) and have more conversations," Bird said.

Bird still wants to talk to other candidates despite Vogel being the most logical choice.
